Ingredients
Scale
For the Cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup hot water
For the Chocolate Swirl:
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
For the Icing (optional):
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square cake pan.
- Prepare the cake batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Make the chocolate swirl: In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder, hot water, and sugar. Stir until smooth and set aside.
- Assemble the marble effect: Divide the batter evenly into two bowls. Stir the chocolate mixture into one half of the batter, and leave the other half plain. Alternately spoon the vanilla and chocolate batters into the prepared pan, creating a marble effect by swirling with a knife or skewer.
- Bake the cake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the icing (optional): If you want to drizzle icing over the cake, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to form a smooth glaze. Drizzle over the cooled cake before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute the cocoa powder with melted chocolate for a richer chocolate flavor.
