Description

This Old Fashioned Easy Apple Crisp is a comforting dessert, featuring spiced apples topped with a buttery, oat-filled crisp topping. It’s the perfect fall treat, combining warm apples with a sweet and crunchy topping. The mix of cinnamon and lemon juice adds a delightful zing to the apples, while the oats provide a satisfying texture in the topping. It’s easy to make and will fill your home with an irresistible aroma.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Spiced Apples:

  • 6 Golden Delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used; can also be sliced)

  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar

  • ¾ tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 ½ tsp lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup light brown sugar

  • ¾ cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but it may have a slightly different texture)

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of kosher salt

  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.

  • In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly, then spread the mixture in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

  • In another bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.

  • Add the cold, diced butter to the oat mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.

  • Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.

  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  • Let the crisp cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute the Golden Delicious apples with other varieties, such as Granny Smith, for a more tart flavor.

  • This crisp can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for a couple of days.

  • For a gluten-free version, you can swap the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
