Ingredients
For the Spiced Apples:
-
6 Golden Delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used; can also be sliced)
-
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
-
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
-
1 ½ tsp lemon juice
For the Crisp Topping:
-
1 cup light brown sugar
-
¾ cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but it may have a slightly different texture)
-
¾ cup all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
-
Pinch of kosher salt
-
½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
-
In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly, then spread the mixture in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
-
In another bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
-
Add the cold, diced butter to the oat mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
-
Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
-
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
-
Let the crisp cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
Notes
-
You can substitute the Golden Delicious apples with other varieties, such as Granny Smith, for a more tart flavor.
-
This crisp can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for a couple of days.
-
For a gluten-free version, you can swap the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
