Ingredients
Scale
For the Spiced Apples
- 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other apple varieties can be used, or you can slice them)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice
For the Crisp Topping
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but the texture may be slightly different)
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of kosher salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the spiced apples:
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss the apples until evenly coated.
- Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 9×9-inch baking dish.
- Make the crisp topping:
- In a separate bowl, mix the light brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold, diced butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to combine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Assemble the crisp:
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the spiced apples in the baking dish.
- Bake the crisp:
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Enjoy it as-is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Notes
- You can use any variety of apples you prefer. Granny Smith apples will add more tartness, while Honeycrisp apples will add more sweetness.
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the apple mixture or the topping.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
