Description

This classic apple crisp is the perfect balance of warm, spiced apples topped with a buttery, crumbly oat topping. It’s an easy-to-make, comforting dessert that’s perfect for fall or any time you crave a sweet, cozy treat!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Spiced Apples

  • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other apple varieties can be used, or you can slice them)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but the texture may be slightly different)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the spiced apples:
    • In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss the apples until evenly coated.
    • Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 9×9-inch baking dish.
  • Make the crisp topping:
    • In a separate bowl, mix the light brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and salt.
    • Add the cold, diced butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to combine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Assemble the crisp:
    • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the spiced apples in the baking dish.
  • Bake the crisp:
    • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.

  • Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Enjoy it as-is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples you prefer. Granny Smith apples will add more tartness, while Honeycrisp apples will add more sweetness.
  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the apple mixture or the topping.

  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
