  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a medium-size saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper until smooth. Slowly add milk, whisking constantly, and cook until the sauce thickens.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour half of the milk mixture over the potatoes. Sprinkle with half of the shredded Cheddar cheese. Repeat layers.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
