Ingredients
Scale
For the Fried Mushrooms:
- 1 lb fresh button mushrooms (or any preferred variety), cleaned and stems removed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Cool Ranch Dip:
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ranch seasoning mix (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp fresh dill, chopped (optional, for added flavor)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional, for extra tang)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Mushrooms:
- Clean and remove the stems from the mushrooms, leaving the caps intact. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
- Set Up the Dredging Station:
- In one shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- In another shallow bowl, beat the eggs.
- In a third shallow bowl, place the breadcrumbs (panko works best for a crisp texture).
- Bread the Mushrooms:
- Dip each mushroom cap into the flour mixture, ensuring it’s well coated.
- Next, dip the flour-coated mushroom into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off.
- Finally, coat the mushroom in the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating. Repeat this process with all the mushrooms.
- Fry the Mushrooms:
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. The oil should reach 350°F (175°C) for optimal frying.
- Working in batches, carefully place the breaded mushrooms into the hot oil, frying them for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Remove the fried mushrooms with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Make the Cool Ranch Dip:
- While the mushrooms are frying, prepare the Cool Ranch Dip by combining the sour cream, mayonnaise, ranch seasoning mix, garlic powder, onion powder, fresh dill (optional), and lemon juice (optional) in a small bowl. Stir until smooth and well combined.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve:
- Arrange the crispy fried mushrooms on a serving platter and serve them hot with the Cool Ranch Dip on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Frying Tip: Make sure the oil stays at a consistent temperature. If the oil is too cool, the mushrooms will absorb more oil and become soggy. If it’s too hot, the coating might burn before the mushrooms cook through.
- Substitutions: You can use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour if needed, or even try a seasoned coating like crushed crackers for a different flavor.
- Storage: Leftover fried mushrooms can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, though they are best enjoyed fresh. Reheat them in the oven to restore some of the crispiness.
