Description

This French Onion Beef and Noodles recipe combines savory ground beef with the rich, caramelized flavor of French onion soup, creating a comforting and hearty dish. Topped with melty, gooey gruyere cheese, it’s a delicious and filling meal that will satisfy your cravings for both pasta and comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook over medium heat until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  • Add the minced garlic, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper to the onions, cooking for 1-2 more minutes until fragrant.
  • Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.
  • While the broth is simmering, cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  • Add the cooked noodles to the skillet with the beef and onion mixture, stirring until the noodles are coated with the sauce.
  • Sprinkle the shredded gruyere cheese over the top and cover the skillet. Allow the cheese to melt and become gooey, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve hot, garnished with additional herbs or cheese if desired.

Notes

  • For extra richness, you can add a splash of heavy cream to the broth before adding the noodles.
  • If you can’t find gruyere cheese, Swiss cheese or a combination of mozzarella and Parmesan can be used as a substitute.
  • This dish can also be made in the oven: transfer everything to a baking dish, top with cheese, and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden and bubbly.
