Description

These tender, fall-off-the-bone BBQ ribs are perfect for any summer cookout or family dinner. The ribs are first seasoned with a flavorful dry rub, slow-cooked to perfection, and finished with a smoky, tangy barbecue sauce that’s finger-licking good.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Ribs:

  • 2 racks of baby back ribs (about 34 pounds)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Dry Rub:

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 tablespoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for spice)

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the BBQ Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ribs:

    • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil.

    • Remove the silver skin (thin membrane) from the back of the ribs by using a paper towel for a firm grip.

    • Pat the ribs dry with paper towels, then season them generously with salt and pepper.

  • Make the Dry Rub:

    • In a small bowl, combine all the dry rub ingredients.

    • Rub the dry mixture all over the ribs, pressing it into the meat. Make sure both sides are well-coated. Let the ribs sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.

  • Cook the Ribs (Slow Roast Method):

    • Place the ribs on the prepared baking sheet, meat-side up. Cover the ribs tightly with aluminum foil.

    • Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, until the ribs are tender and the meat pulls away from the bone easily.

  • Prepare the BBQ Sauce:

    • While the ribs are baking, combine all the BBQ sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.

    • Stir to combine, and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until it thickens slightly. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.

  • Finish the Ribs:

    • Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once the ribs are done baking, remove them from the oven and carefully discard the foil.

    • Brush the BBQ sauce generously over the ribs.

    • Grill the ribs for 5-7 minutes per side, basting with additional sauce, until they have a nice char and the sauce is caramelized.

  • Serve:

    • Remove the ribs from the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with additional BBQ sauce on the side.

Notes

If you don’t have a grill, you can also finish the ribs under the broiler for 5-7 minutes, keeping an eye on them to avoid burning the sauce.

For a smoky flavor, you can add liquid smoke to your BBQ sauce or cook the ribs over indirect heat on the grill.
