Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large sweet potatoes
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
- Arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer in a baking dish. Pour the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the top of the sweet potatoes.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, basting occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the sauce is thickened.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cloves to the syrup mixture.
- If you prefer a more caramelized texture, bake for an additional 10-15 minutes uncovered.
- For a more decadent version, top the casserole with mini marshmallows during the last 10 minutes of baking and broil until golden brown.
- If you’d like a healthier alternative, you can reduce the sugar or use a natural sweetener like maple syrup or honey.
