Description

These Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes are a classic comfort food dish, rich with the sweetness of brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The tender sweet potatoes are baked to perfection with a buttery, caramelized sauce that’s absolutely irresistible. A must-have for holiday meals or any special occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  • Arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer in a baking dish. Pour the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the top of the sweet potatoes.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, basting occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the sauce is thickened.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cloves to the syrup mixture.
  • If you prefer a more caramelized texture, bake for an additional 10-15 minutes uncovered.
  • For a more decadent version, top the casserole with mini marshmallows during the last 10 minutes of baking and broil until golden brown.
  • If you’d like a healthier alternative, you can reduce the sugar or use a natural sweetener like maple syrup or honey.
